Inspection at Domaine Du Vallon May 2010 Thank you for bringing your horses once more to the inspection and show at Domaine Du Vallon, and also a big thank you for Corinne for putting on yet another excellently organized show with a very nice atmosphere, good friends, enthusiastic breeders and nice weather all helped to make the day such a big success. It was only in 2008 we started here at Domaine du vallon with GCS inspections, and in this short time the breed standard has improved far beyond my expectations. This is such an encouraging sign and shows to me that breeders are now getting an understanding of the true Gypsy Cob breed. It really does mean so very much to me that everyone has listened and watched my judgement, taken home their thoughts and obviously made such an effort to produce good Gypsy Cobs at these inspections. This is all excellent news, new breeders starting out in the Gypsy Cob breed will not make the mistakes of the early breeders in France as they now have the opportunity to see good Gypsy Cobs in France by attending the inspections organized by the GCS Fr. I really don’t have anything negative to say, how good is that? The show was well supported by the exhibitors and breeders and it gave me such a big heart to see the rest of our committee present and showing a united team, thank you to everyone who made such an obvious big effort to attend, and i know from experience the many miles driven, I think Charlotte, Marion and myself did over 2000 miles in 3 days! Well done to everyone! Each of our class winners were good examples of the breed, the yearlings are hard to judge at this age, they are ‘all legs’ and need time to grow and mature, but they are developing in the right direction and in 2 or 3 years will be good Gypsy Cobs. The mares have improved generally, still a few poor examples were presented, and this is when you have to decide the difference between that which is NOT a Gypsy Cob and that which is a POOR quality Gypsy Cob, It is a little worrying to me that perhaps a poor quality borderline Gypsy Cob which we have agreed ‘yes’ it is a Gypsy Cob ‘but not a good one’ can then be taken home with its owner and bred from. The responsibility of the breeding of a mare is entirely responsible of its owner, whereas, the stallion has to go through a hard inspection, can be passed as a Gypsy Cob, yes, but fail as a breeding stallion. Perhaps we need to think about this in the future, if owners are honest with themselves, and don’t breed from poor quality then the breed will be safe, but what if they ignore our comments on the inspection sheet and breed from her anyway? Just something for you to think about.... I don’t normally mention individual horses in my inspection reports but I think in this case a particular horse is worth a mention, BOB TAN, the red and white stallion, I saw him in August 2009 and he had been under vet care for a period of time and not looking at his best, and then we see him again in May 2010 and I have to say he has improved in condition 100% and filled out his body and now begins to look like the stallion he should be, unfortunately because of a leg injury (and not a conformation fault) he has to be marked low on his movement, but it is not a genetic fault and his final inspection score is perhaps a little deceiving because of this. Congratulations to his owner who obviously put in a lot of nursing to get this stallion into the good condition he is today.
A very nice final line up, a well deserved Champion, and a special mention to Chance and all his beautiful daughters, a real example of breeding consistently good type. Chance has some of the best available bloodlines from England and his generations of good breeding through his mother and grandmother have proved very dominant in his daughters. A good example of good select breeding, thank you Corinne for presenting him to us with his large family.! I look forward to seeing you all again, thank you sincerely, for your kind comments and messages, you are all doing such an excellent job and the breed is very safe in such caring hands.
